What's actually changing
Since June 15, 2026, French Health Insurance (Assurance Maladie) covers 65% of the price of Wegovy and Mounjaro for the weight-control indication — a rate that reaches 100% for patients with a long-term condition (ALD, affection de longue durée), which applies to the majority of people who are actually eligible. Mounjaro also benefits from reimbursement for type 2 diabetes.
Who is eligible?
Reimbursement is not available to anyone wanting to lose a few pounds. It targets severe forms of obesity, as a second-line option, after a well-managed nutritional program has failed:
- Initial BMI ≥ 40 kg/m², or
- Initial BMI ≥ 35 kg/m² combined with a comorbidity (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, dyslipidemia, cardiovascular disease)
- Prior failure of a structured nutritional program
The reimbursed initial prescription is limited to a specialized pathway (specialized obesity centers, university hospitals, affiliated endocrinologists) — a general practitioner can handle renewal, but not initiation of treatment under the reimbursed scheme.
Understanding the mechanisms: single, dual, and triple GLP-1 agonists
Wegovy, Ozempic and Mounjaro belong to the family of GLP-1 analogs, molecules that mimic a natural satiety hormone. They differ based on the number of receptors they activate simultaneously:
Retatrutide is the subject of ongoing clinical trials and attracts strong interest in the scientific literature as a research candidate for combined metabolic pathways. To learn more about what the current literature documents, see our article human studies: retatrutide, tirzepatide, BPC-157, GHK-Cu. Retatrutide as a research peptide is available on our dedicated product page, reserved for laboratory use.
