A pentadecapeptide derived from gastric juice
BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound 157) is a synthetic pentadecapeptide whose sequence is derived from a protein identified in human gastric juice. It is one of the most documented peptides in the preclinical literature on tissue repair, with a body of animal studies spanning more than two decades, largely originating from Professor Sikiric's laboratory in Zagreb.
Mechanisms studied
Preclinical studies report several avenues of action for BPC-157:
- Angiogenesis — promotes the formation of new blood vessels at the site of the studied lesion, via modulation of the VEGFR2 pathway
- Gastrointestinal protection — historical data on the compound largely concern models of digestive tract lesions
- Modulation of the NO system — reported interaction with the nitric oxide pathway, which is involved in healing
- Reported effects on tendons and ligaments — several animal models study its ability to promote the repair of injured tendon structures
